The best answer would be to speak with a retirement adviser who understands your whole financial situation and can then advice appropriately. Buying Put options is not a simple answer because you need to determine what is the best strike price and the best expiration date to buy. (do you buy a $150 Jan 2012 put or a $125 Jan 2012 put, how much does that cost and is the "insurance" from the put option worth the cost).

I have 2500 shrs of company issued stock options (symbol PCP) that expire in 2013. They are worth ~ $125/shr, or $300K. I don't want to sell them right now as they would be taxed as ordinary income. I plan to retire possibly next year in 2012, so exercising them in 2013 when I have no other income could save on taxes. In the meantime, should I buy 25 put options to protect the 2500 shrs, or is there a better strategy? I have no experience in trading options.
